Project Update

Highway construction in full swing again

The 2011 construction season has begun on the Kicking Horse Canyon Project, and crews are particularly busy on the section closest to town, working hard at preparing new highway lanes and re-constructing local network roads in order to move traffic off the current detour route on Golden Hill.

This month, Lafontaine Road and the Lafontaine Road/Golden Donald Upper Road intersection will be moved to a temporary alignment slightly to the north within the construction zone, as work begins on the roundabout in front of the Visitor Information Centre.

Later in May, the Golden Donald Upper Road intersection at the Trans-Canada Highway will be temporarily shifted east as work picks up at the new overpass.

By June, traffic will be driving on a portion of the brand new Trans-Canada Highway, with the Golden Donald Upper Road overpass planned for opening later in the fall.

During this time, motorists are being asked to slow down, exercise caution in following the detour signs, and obey instructions from traffic controllers.

To keep abreast of the route changes, check in on the Traffic Advisories page of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project website at or receive updates by following TranBC and DriveBC on Twitter.  The very latest highway conditions are posted at
